Sometimes referred to as “Peruvian ginseng” (though not related to the true ginseng group), maca grows in the harsh and extreme conditions of the Andes Mountains of central Peru. The uniqueness of Peruvian maca is the fact that it is cultivated agriculturally at the highest elevations on Earth of any crop, between 13,000 and 14,800 feet (4,000 and 4,500 meters above sea level). Maca has been consumed for centuries in the Andes and has had a sacred recognition amongst the indigenous peoples since pre-Incan times.

GELATINIZATION PROCESS: The maca gelatinization processes came about in the 1990s in order to make “raw” maca powder, a cruciferous root, easier to digest. Boiling and pressurization is used to greatly reduce the starch content thus creating a more concentrated maca than “raw” maca. Thus, gelatinized maca can be easier to digest than “raw” maca for those who experience digestive issues consuming “raw” maca.
